What Customers Say About Panasonic DMR-EZ485VK 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built In Tuner:

New unit burns right every time. This is our 2nd Panasonic unit. Got this to dump recorded programs off our PVR/Video to DVD, and it has been working fine -- in fact, just arrived in time for TCM Free Oscar Month, so the DVD been burning Oscar Winning movies continuously since it arrived. Very happy with the flexible recording so each movie is on exactly one DVD. Earlier unit started to have problems (after 4 years) burning DVDs reliably so we opted to replace it.

Sorry Panasonic. Nothing. It stopped recognizing any dvd I put into it, blank, formatted, commercially released. I usually like Panasonic products but, this one just stinks. Am I wrong for panning this thing for konking out a little after one year. Well, the DVD part did anyway. I've tried just about everything I could think of to try and reset the DVD player/recorder to no avail.

Therefore, I have my cable connected to the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK and going out to the TV. The quality is not as good as a direct connection to the TV. I use the TV remote to change channels. All aspects of the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK are great. When I want to record TV, I turn on the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK and change inputs on the TV to select the HDMI hooked to the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK. I realize that if I record TV that it will be upconverted in playback.

Using it's tunner. I relied on the reviews of others and the reputation of Panasonic for my purchase. The only disappointment is with the tuner. But, I don't turn the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK on.

There is a great drop off in quality between LP and EP recordings. Most other recorders have poor quality video at both LP & EP speeds. That is the main reason that I purchased this recorder. That enables 4 hours of almost SP quality video on a DVD. Sales info on other sites indicated this machine was manufactured for sale in retail stores like Wal-Mart, and thus the difference. I already own a similar version of this fine recorder. My machine responds quicker than this one, but the high quality video produced at LP speeds is the same. Panasonic is the only recorder that provided this high quality video at LP speed.

Since I have another DVD/VCR recorder that does this, I was surprised by this limitation. It seems that this should be in BIG BOLD letters on the box. The only saving grace of all this is that if I unplug the device and then plug it back in, I can get it to work again.for now.Update: The unit froze up yesterday and I needed to unplug it again. Then a couple of months later, I could no longer record to DVD. Well, duh.you need to turn the unit off to record a program, and so the unit is designed to stop working after a period of usage.

Lo and behold, on Page 88 of the owner's manual I found the following "If you repeatedly insert discs or turn the unit on and off about 50 times or more, the recording or editing of. How can Panasonic sell a product with this obvious defect. I guess I'll just have to start unplugging it weekly when I schedule my recording for the week. I also missed some shows I thought I had recorded due to this. Hopefully this doesn't cause some other hidden problem to appear. Then it wouldn't record again, so I took out the manual. Well, all hopes of recording to tapes were dashed after I discovered that it would not record digital programs to tape.

But, I decided that only recording to DVDs would be fine. discs may be disabled". You need to go to the physical unit to do this. One other complaint I have is that there is no open/close button on the remore control. I bought this product because it had a digital tuner and could record on both tapes and DVD. I unplugged the unit and re-ran set-up and all was well for a little while. Since they have documented the problem, they know that the problem exists.
